One of five recognized methods of becoming a board member includes becoming a corporate raider - controlling enough capital to purchase a significant stake in a company and demanding one or more board seats, creating shareholder resolutions that seek to improve the company, and digging your teeth in for a fight for company control. Then why is it that a simple October 2014 Google search shows no results for 'can a woman be a corporate raider'? Read this article here...

Q&A WITH CEO & FOUNDER SHEILA RONNING
For many men, becoming a corporate board member is the obvious next step once they’ve reached a certain point in their careers. How can we get more women at this level to recognize that they’re just as qualified for board positions? The good news is that women are starting to recognize or at least start asking the questions to find out if they are qualified. Women tend to undermine their skill-set & qualifications but I strongly believe that if we keep having the conversation, we will see more women putting themselves out there & seeking board opportunities.
Many women's organizations & companies who want to grow their female leaders are interested in learning how to excavate these skill-sets & qualifications. How can WIB assist? Our webinars are an easy way to lunch & learn about relevant topics such as what boards are looking for, how to fine-tune your skills & present yourself effectively for board service. I also frequently visit groups in-person or virtually to discuss leadership & corporate board service. Often times, we'll have small-group discussions to help identify & own our unique skills & differentiators. These talks tend to be very empowering for women. Organizations who are looking for female leadership development are welcome to contact me to set up a time to talk with their women.
WIB provides information on board openings to VIP Members. Are you a search firm? No, we are not, although we have been provided information on 47 openings in just over one-and-a-half years - which is a lot! In October so far, we've had three positions that we emailed the details on to VIP Members.

WIB EVENT SPEAKER & VIP MEMBER DONIKA PENTCHEVA
As a panelist for our Nov. 5th Twin Cities Signature Event, why would you suggest women attend our live events? WIB events provide unprecedented, often one-on-one access to high-caliber professionals who are board experts or are already serving on corporate boards. These are the people that you want to know & that want to know you! They are the directors that will invariably be involved in the selection process of future board members on their corporate boards. I have tried to attend every in-person event in the Twin Cities, because they are not only informative about the board process & current boardroom issues, but provide a unique opportunity to network with women who already serve on corporate boards & could provide you valuable connections.
What has been the most valuable thing that WIB has offered you during VIP Membership? Why? The most valuable aspect of being a VIP Member is the number & variety of openings for paid corporate board positions. Those in the ‘boardroom world’ know that corporate board openings are almost never advertised & are often filled way in advance, usually with people within the network of sitting board directors.
"The most valuable part of VIP Membership has been working with the board coach. I was provided outstanding, actionable advice and counsel as I was preparing my board bio." - Shirley Weis, Pres. of Weis Associates, LLC & Former VP & CAO of Mayo Clinic
"One-on-one coaching with Women in the Boardroom helps me package and present the ways I can contribute to an organization and serve on a board." - Ann Booth-Barbarin, Sr. Counsel & Asst. Secretary, AstraZeneca
We recommend the book 'Tapping the Wisdom That Surrounds You: Mentorship & Women' from our VIP Member & previous WIB event speaker Elizabeth Ghaffari. If you are curious about how to find a mentor, what the benefits of mentorship are, or you are interested in inspiring personal stories from female leaders, this book will help you make purposeful steps to utilize the wisdom around you.
